The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has pledged his support to the Ukrainian populace as Russia's aggression towards Ukraine continues.
The French leader emphasizes that peace in Ukraine is vital for the security, freedom, and future of Europe.
“Together we are increasing pressure on Russia to obtain an unconditional ceasefire and the opening of negotiations for a just and lasting peace,” says Macron.
On Friday, the European Union approved sanctions against Russia, aimed at reducing the price cap on Russian oil, prohibiting transactions involving Nord gas pipelines, and targeting shadow fleet vessels.
The EU's chief foreign policy officer, Kaja Kallas, asserts that these sanctions will compel Russia to end its offensive in Ukraine.
“The message is clear: Europe will not back down in its support for Ukraine. The EU will keep raising the pressure until Russia ends its war,” says Kallas.
The war between Russia and Ukraine started on February 24, 2022, over Russia's annexation and occupation of Crimea.
The war led to the highest recorded casualties in Ukraine in March 2022, with 4,312 fatalities and 3,018 injuries, according to data from Statista.
As of May 2025, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has reported 183 civilian deaths.
