The United States has imposed sanctions on over 35 individuals and entities that it alleges are linked to money laundering that supports the Iranian government.
Tammy Bruce, the spokesperson for the US Department of State, stated that these individuals and companies misappropriated billions through indirect transactions in Iranian exchange houses and foreign businesses to further terrorism.
“Today, the United States is sanctioning over 35 individuals and entities with ties to a network involved in money laundering on behalf of the Iranian regime,” the statement read.
“This network has laundered billions of dollars through Iranian exchange houses and foreign front companies to sustain Tehran’s campaigns of terror that undermine international peace and security and line the pockets of regime elites,” it adds.
The Trump administration pledges to choke the Iranian financial networks, including Zarringhalam brothers and an associate it claims helps Iran earn revenue through petroleum sales, among other items.
The US recently issued various sanctions, including the recent travel ban on 14 countries, including some African countries. A decision the African Union said would compromise diplomatic ties.
On Monday, Esmail Baghaei, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, was quoted as saying Iran seeks sanctions relief when it strikes a deal with the US over Tehran's nuclear program.
