Manchester United’s Captain, Bruno Fernandes, has scooped the prestigious Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year Award.
Fernandes secured a sweeping 82 per cent of the votes, making him the third player in United’s history to win the award four times. Bruno joins David de Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo, who also won the award four times.
“Despite United’s struggles in the Premier League, our no.8 has been inspirational, racking up 38 goal involvements (19 goals and 19 assists) across 54 games,” reads part of a report on the reds’ official website.
According to Manchester United’s website, United’s defender Noussair Mazraoui was second, and Amad Diallo, another Man United forward, held the third position in the confidential ballot.
Sir Matt Busby was a former Manchester United Manager from 1945 to 1970 and from 1970 to 1971. The award is presented to Manchester United’s Player of the Season, who has been voted for by fans.
The award was formerly called the MUFC Members Player of the Year. Its name was changed in 1996 to honour Busby after he died in 1994. The trophy is in the form of Busby’s statue.
Brian McClair was its first winner in 1988 and also the first to win it twice. The other players who also received the award include Roy Keane, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Cristiano Ronaldo, David de Gea and Bruno Fernandes.
