The chairperson of Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council, Abdelfattah Al-Burhan, appointed Kamil al-Tayeb Idris as the prime minister. on Monday.
Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, says Tayeb's appointment will strengthen inclusive governance in Sudan.
“The Chairperson commends this development as a step toward inclusive governance and expresses hope that it will contribute meaningfully to ongoing efforts to restore constitutional order and democratic governance in Sudan,” a statement issued by the AU Commission’s chair reads.
Youssouf calls for a civilian-led and inclusive political transition. He pledges the support of the African Union in collaboration with the international community.
The fighting in Sudan has been raging since April 15, 2023, leading to massive loss of lives and displacement of Sudanese to neighbouring countries. Rights groups
have cited gross human rights violations committed against women and children.
12.4 million people are internally displaced in Sudan, while 3.3 million seek refuge in neighbouring countries.
